Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired the film rights to the anime classic Robotech, with Tobey Maguire producing through his Maguire Entertainment.Warner Brothers? Tobey Maguire? Tobey Maguire as Rick? And I can just see Minmei being cast as not-Chinese. This screams bad idea.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is considering the lead role in the futuristic tale of giant robots and alien invaders. The studio plans on the sci-fi epic becoming a tentpole franchise.
And in non-nerd news, I quit my temp job this week. Here's to some self-dignity, an empty wallet, and a stack of resumes.

yuck! yuck! yuck!
Meh.
Robotech was an amalgamation of multiple anime series anyway.
If they were doing that to Macross, I would be vexed.
I am so surprised--I never thought in a million years I would hear about live action Robotech.
I have feeling that the movie will focus on the Macross portion, because I don't see how they could bring in the other two in the span of even a couple of hours.
I'm sure they have sequals in mind though. :P
Tobey Maguire as Rick? No way. Next they'll cast Katie Holmes as Lisa Hayes.
Who would I cast instead? I'm not sure. I could see Niall Matter doing a passable job, but they would probably want someone with more star power.
Of course the big question - who could be awesome enough to play Max Sterling?
Wow, he really does look like Rick.
Heh, Max. How weird would it be to not hear Cam Clarke's voice associated with the character?
I think you would embrace the idea of Minmei not being Chinese. After all, wouldn't a Chinese character with a name like Minmei be degrading and a huge step back for Asian-Americans?
Ummm, no. And also, she is Chinese.
